Vice President's Message

Ken Ray

As we move into the Summer Semester, let me take the opportunity to thank our faculty for all their hard work this year.  I appreciate your focus on student success and helping students be their best in and out of your courses. For the faculty who will be away from the college this summer as well as those who continue to teach this summer, have a great summer!

I am happy to report that many of the changes that the college made as a result of the CLARUS Report and the Blueprint for Improving the Student Experience are showing benefits to students. This year the Registrar’s office has been primarily focused on improving the incoming student experience and meeting compliance regulations. After the college centralized the Veterans Affairs staff and Registrar's staffing the students have experienced on average:

  • Completed VA certifications within the required 30-day window
  • Reduced admissions application processing from up to 8 weeks to an average of 3 days
  • Reduced transcript processing time from as much as 2 weeks to 2 days
  • Reduces transcript evaluation time from as much as 18 months to 45 days

We recognized the need to drastically reduce the transcript evaluation time to help transfer students receive more timely and accurate advising upon entering HCC.  I am so impressed with our Registrar, Jennifer Young, her staff and the staff throughout the college on enhancing these services within one year after centralizing these processes.

Kudos also goes to the Financial Aid Department that continues to make enhancements and improvements to the student experience.  This year this department:

  • Decreased wait times in offices by 48%
  • Acquired an additional $240,000 in Florida Student Assistance Grant funding so they could award more deserving students with this opportunity
  • Began awarding Financial Aid for the 2015-2016 academic year two months earlier

We are also proud of the improvements in Financial Aid audits.  The department received no audit criticisms during the latest audit.  Much of this is due to changes in processing and college procedures.

Thank you again for your hard work and I hope you all find time for some well-deserved rest and rejuvenation this summer. ~ Dr. Ken Ray, Jr.

College Reach Out and Middleton College Bound Initiative

The HCC College Reach-Out Program is entering its thirty-second year at HCC and currently serves 200 high school and middle school students.  The primary objective of the College Reach-Out Program (CROP) is to increase the number of low-income educationally disadvantaged students in grades 6 through 12 who, upon high school graduation, are admitted to and successfully complete postsecondary education. 100% of this year's program graduates have applied and been accepted to post-secondary institutions in Florida - we are proud of our graduates!

The Middleton College Bound Initiative provides students with on-site services (i.e. application completion, financial aid completion, registration for classes) in an effort to eliminate any barriers they may encounter with the admissions process. The program is three years old and has resulted in significant benefits for students as well as the College.  Over the last two years 44% of the graduating class has enrolled at Hillsborough Community College!  More information...
