SSEM Update

   March 2016 Edition

WHM 2016

Vice President's Message  - Dr. Ken Ray, Jr.

Spring Break

As we move toward Spring Break, I would like to share with you a brief update on the College’s Blueprint to Improve the Student Experience.  As you may recall, the Blueprint involved the restructuring of Student Services which included centralizing Financial Aid, Veterans Affairs, and Registrar processes.  Through this process we made a distinction between college-wide Enrollment Management functions and campus-oriented Student Development Services.  Centralization of Enrollment processes was completed in Fall of 2015.

Additionally, while working with the CLARUS Corporation, the Enrollment Planning Taskforce developed the 2014-2017 Strategic Enrollment Management Plan that incorporated 22 objectives.  This past Fall semester, with the assistance of Dr. Jennifer China, Craig Johnson, Ashley Carl, Warren Smith and Dionna Doss the college accomplished three of the plan objectives:

We also began exploring a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) process for the College.  PLA  evaluates academic credit for college-level knowledge and skills that students have gained outside of the traditional classroom.  PLA can reduce the time and expense of receiving a degree or certification.  You can read more about this in the attached China Report: A review of targeted actions items from the 2014-2017 HCC Enrollment Management Plan.

As we continue to pursue the goals of the 2014-2017 Strategic Enrollment Management Plan we want to develop a college-wide recruitment and communication plan. Towards that goal, the Enrollment Management Steering Committee is charged with implementing successful enrollment management strategies and student success initiatives.  The committee is working with Swim Digital Group and various college departments to create specific communications to our students from their initial exposure to HCC through graduation.

My thanks to the members of the Steering Committee and Action Teams:

Enrollment Management Steering Committee: Daya Pendharkar, Dr. Joan Holmes, Craig Johnson, Ashley Carl, Dr. Nancee Sorenson, Dr. Allen  Witt, and Trimeka Benjamin and the Swim Digital Group,

Enrollment Communications Team: Tierra Smith (Team Leader),  Michelle Beaubian, Julia Coccaro, Maribel Garrett, Christine Rodriguez, Randy Shlifer, Erika Wallace, Yaima Serrano,

Recruitment Action Team: Dr. Jennifer China (Team Leader), Dr. Jennifer Dale, Sandy Guggino, Cris Legner, Vicki McCaskill, Christina Sanchez, Warren Smith and Reshod Webb.

Thank you for all of your hard work, and I wish you a safe and relaxing Spring Break! -
Dr. Ken Ray, Jr.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention

We are pleased to unveil the new webpage for HCC's Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Program (DAAPP). http://www.hccfl.edu/ssem/daapp.aspx  This comprehensive webpage includes information about HCC's standards of conduct regarding illicit drugs and alcohol and the disciplinary actions and legal sanctions imposed by violations to our policies.  The webpage also outlines the health risks associated with abuse and provides resources for students and HCC employees.   HCC's Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Program is designed to prevent the unlawful possession, use and distribution of drugs and alcohol on campus and at recognized events and activities.  Please take a moment to review this webpage.

Spring 2016 Academic Advising Transfer Day

College roadsign On Wednesday Feb 17th, Shirley Dobbins the Project Manager for STEM and the Dale Mabry Academic Advising & Counseling Office held a Transfer Day with the University of South Florida (USF). This event afforded our students the opportunity to meet with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to discuss the transfer process; attend academic program-based workshops and discuss program requirements with academic advisors. Some of the Colleges and Programs represented were the School of Information, Department of Anthropology, School of Social Work, Communication Science & Disorders Program, College of Engineering, College of Business, College of Nursing, and Health Science Programs.

Many thanks to the Dale Mabry Academic Advisors, Counselors and Karla Solis, the Assistant Dean of Student Services for a phenomenal job! They were onsite to greet our guests from USF, hand out advising and counseling materials and answer general academic advising questions.  Stay tuned -  there are more great Academic Advising initiatives to come!

Community Outreach - Career Resource Center

For the third year in a row, Metropolitan Ministries (MM) and the Leadership Tampa Alumni (LTA) have hosted an Employment Bootcamp for MM clients.  The purpose of the camp is to assist those individuals who are unemployed and provide them with the necessary tools to help get them back in the job market.

HCC’s Career Resource Center
staff has played a key role in assisting MM clients reach their career goals.  Each year our staff volunteer to participate in the camp to assist clients with their resume writing and interview skills.  Last year 12 clients participated in the program and were hired immediately following graduation.
Thank you to Alisa Keaton for representing HCC this year.

Did You Know….there are more than 25,000 homeless people in the Tampa Bay area?
