American Medical Student Association Establishes a Chapter at HCC

HCC is pleased to form a relationship with the American Medical Student Association (AMSA).  AMSA is a student-governed, national organization committed to representing the concerns of all physicians-in-training and is pleased to establish a chapter at Hillsborough Community College this fall.  The HCC AMSA Premedical Chapter is a district wide initiative open to students on all campuses.  The group has set a goal of recruiting 50 members across all campuses over the 2011-2012 academic year.  During the year the HCC chapter hopes to fulfill a wide variety of goals including (1) promoting relationships with Florida medical schools, (2) establishing a "Hands On Health" Program where members learn health related skills such as suturing, testing blood pressure, checking pulses, performing CPR, etc., (3) organizing blood and organ donor programs, (4) participating in health related community service projects, (5) providing a formal job shadowing program with local physicians and physician’s assistants and (6) developing an on-campus and virtual resource center. In addition, HCC AMSA will be dedicated to promoting the HCC Commit2Complete program within its membership and within HCC.  HCC AMSA members will also send chapter delegates to the National AMSA convention in March.  For students interested in joining HCC AMSA, there will be an Informational Meeting on Thursday, September 15 from 4-5pm on the Brandon Campus in room 206/208 of the Student Services Building.  We invite all students to come meet our President, Marco Suarez, and our Vice-President, Nayana Joogoolsingh.  Please feel free to contact the HCC AMSA Faculty Advisor, Professor Elizabeth McCullough, at emccullough@hccfl.edu for more information.

Financial Aid

Student Services and Financial Aid Central Processing Services - Plans are underway for the Financial Aid and District ARR to move to the Ybor City Collaboration Studio this October. This location will serve as an off-campus processing center for many of the operations performed on the campuses in Financial Aid.  These processes include student verification and processing loans, grants and other aid.  The current staff located at the District Office is expected to move to the Collaboration Studio the third week of October.  Linda Joy Clemons, Director of Financial Aid is establishing a transition team to assist with the migration to centralized processing.

Veteran Student Services

Veteran Student Services Task Force - Given the Post 911 GI Bill and the subsequent increase in new Veterans enrolling in college, a taskforce of HCC staff and community partners has been developed to review ways to enhance our services for Veteran Students.  We expect the Taskforce will make their recommendations to the Cabinet this Fall.

New Initiatives

LIFE - Linking In Faith and Education Project - A recruitment team led by Sharlotte Henderson, and comprised of Dr. Keith Berry and Rashod Web will champion the LIFE Outreach Initiative.  Linking In Faith and Education is a recruitment program targeting potential students from various Black Churches in the area.  The Kickoff breakfast is October 19 at the University Club.   Ministers interested in helping their members learn about college and attend HCC will be in attendance.

Middleton High School Recruitment - The 100 Black Men of Tampa Bay, Inc. are partnering with HCC in an effort to encourage the Middleton High School senior class to graduate and attend college.  A small task force has developed a an initiative  to meet this goal.  Barbara Cockfield and Tim Warren are leading the effort to work with all Middleton High School seniors to provide admissions and financial aid assistance.

Administrative and Legislative Updates

CSA/CIA Meeting - The Florida Council of Student Affairs/Council of Instructional Affairs meeting will be held at the Hilton Bayshore in St. Pete from October 12 - 14, 2012.
