Mr. Bret Bartlett retired in 2013 from the Tampa Police Department, with almost 32 years of service, at the rank of Captain.  He served as a Patrol Officer, Burglary and Criminal Intelligence Detective, Patrol Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain, and commanded the Major Crimes, Criminal Intelligence, Support Services, and the Internal Affairs Bureau.  While serving with TPD he both conducted investigations and supervised other Detectives.


Mr. Bartlett is currently the owner of Ex Umbra Defense Solutions LLC, A Florida Licensed Private Investigative and Security Agency (A and B Agencies).  He is a Licensed Private Investigator (C License), Security Officer (D License), and State-wide Firearms Instructor (K License).


One of Mr. Bartlett’s additional duties with TPD was as the department's lead firearms instructor and he was responsible for developing and delivering firearms instruction.  He continues to be an active firearms instructor for Ex Umbra Defense Solutions and is currently certified by the State of Florida as both a police firearms instructor and as an instructor for State of Florida G licensees.  Mr. Bartlett also holds numerous NRA firearms instructor ratings in both the civilian and police categories.    Mr. Bartlett is also a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.


Mr. Bartlett holds a Masters of Education Degree (Concentration in Adult Education) from Northwestern State University-Louisiana (2007) with Masters level courses in Criminal Justice from Florida State University and Saint Leo University.  He graduated from Saint Leo’s University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminology in 2002, and Hillsborough Community College (Tampa, FL) with an Associate in Arts Degree in 1999.
