Federal Work-Study

STEP 1:  Determine if you are eligible for FWS prior to applying (see “How to qualify?”).

STEP 2:  Once you have determined if you are eligible, please apply online here.

NOTE:  A resume will be required to attach to the application. If you need help working on a resume, please see our Career Resource Center webpage for more information or contact your campus Career Resource Center below for assistance.

• Your application will be reviewed by the Career Resource Center of the campus you chose as your preference on the application.
• If your application matches an available position, you may be contacted to discuss further.
• If you are interested in the position, your application will be forwarded to the supervisor for review and you may be contacted for an interview.
• If hired, paperwork will be submitted to HR and you will be contacted to complete your new hire paperwork, fingerprinting, and background check.
• If your background check is approved, you will be cleared to work and given a start date.

• Academic Success Center
  • Provide assistance to ASC, provide technical support, schedule tutoring appointments, maintain equipment, answer phones, greet students, and other duties as assigned.
• Library
  • Reshelf books and magazines, empty recycle bins, straighten up books, answer basic questions at the front desk, assist with checking students in and out, assist with printing and copying, general office duties, other duties as assigned.
• Science Labs
  • Fill disinfectant bottles, check and fill all gloves, check chemistry trays, wash all dishes and put away in drying racks, fill staining bottles and soap bottles, autoclave all tubes in bottom of fridge, autoclave all red bags in every classroom, and other duties as assigned.
• Student Government Association (SGA)
  • Assist students in Student Center, ensure students are following the center guidelines, perform clerical duties, help set up, run, and take down for SGA events, help SGA members and clubs in the operation and planning of events, and other duties as assigned.
• Enrollment Development Office
  • Assist prospective students with admissions application, copy documents, prepare recruitment packets, assist at recruitment events on and off campus, prepare recruitment bags for community outreach and recruitment events, follow up with recent applicants, and other duties as assigned.
• Financial Aid
  • Provide customer service, monitor front desk, sign students in, keep lobby clean, scan student documents, create files, answer phones, assist staff with calling students from lobby, and other duties as assigned.

NOTE:  Positions vary from campus to campus and are dependent upon availability. Please contact your campus Career Center for examples of available job descriptions.

Some campuses have community partnerships with off-campus non-profit organizations that you could possibly be placed into if interested and if a position is available. You must meet the same eligibility requirements whether working on-campus or off-campus.

Federal Work-Study students currently make $8.65 per hour (increasing to $10.00 per hour starting September 30th 2021). You will be paid bi-weekly through direct deposit.

Students can work up to 20 hours per week, depending upon how much they qualify through their financial aid award. Your FWS award is the maximum you can earn for that semester, so we can help you calculate how many hours you can work per week. Your FWS award will start over each semester based on what you qualify for at that time.

Federal Work-Study earnings do not have to be used on school expenses only. This is income that could be used for rent, bills, food, clothes, etc.

Some campuses may have other opportunities outside of Federal Work-Study. Please check with your campus Career Resource Center or check the HCC Jobs webpage for more information.

There is no deadline to apply. Jobs are available on a first-come basis.

You can remain in the program as long as you continue to meet all financial aid eligibility and job duty requirements. Please see “How do I qualify” above.

Acceptance into the Federal Work-Study program is not contingent on prior work experience.

You will receive communication from the Career Resource Center staff.
