Math Pathways

The Legislation:

Under the direction of the Florida Legislature and SB 366 (2021) students who enter a Florida College System (FCS) institution in the 2024-2025 academic year or thereafter will follow a specific Math Pathway based on their major.

The Pathways:

The following three pathways were developed for students pursuing an AA, AS or Bachelor's degree. These pathways are incorporated in your HawkGPS plan and the HCC catalog (beginning in Fall 2024).

  1. Algebra through Calculus Pathway. MAC 1105 College Algebra and MAC 2311 Calculus are both Gateway courses that satisfy the Core math requirement. (If a student successfully completes a higher level math that requires MAC 1105 or MAC 2311 as an immediate prerequisite, they will have satisfied this pathway requirement.)
  2. Statistical Reasoning Pathway. STA 2023 Elementary Statistics is the Gateway course that satisfies the Core math requirement.
  3. Mathematical Thinking in Context Pathway. MGF 1130 Mathematical Thinking is the Gateway course that satisfies the Core math requirement for this pathway.  MGF 1131 Mathematics in Context is a Gateway course for this pathway but it does not satisfy the Core math requirement.

Core Math Courses:

  • Students pursuing the AA degree must successfully complete at least 6 credits of math that include at least one Core Math.
  • Students pursuing an AS degree must successfully complete at least 3 credits of Core Math.
  • Any student who successfully completes a mathematics course that uses one of the gateway courses as an immediate prerequisite shall be considered to have completed the mathematics core. For example, students who successfully complete MAC 1114 or MAC 1140 are considered to have completed the math core and math pathway requirements because those courses have MAC 1105 as an immediate prerequisite.  See the College Catalog here for prerequisite information.

Changes to MGF 1106 and MGF 1107:

As part of this legislation, two new courses (MGF 1130 and MGF 1131) are replacing MGF 1106 and MGF 1107 in Fall 2024.

Students who received a grade of D or F in MGF 1106 and/or MGF 1107 should speak with an advisor to discuss the following options:

  • Take MGF 1130 in Fall 2024 or later to replace the D or F grade in MGF 1106.
  • Take MGF 1131 in Fall 2024 or later to replace the D or F grade in MGF 1107.  Note: MGF 1131 is not a designated Core math course, so students may need to take an additional Core math to satisfy the graduation requirement.

Students facing a third or fourth attempt should complete a "Course Repeat Fee Waiver". Please meet with a Counselor to initiate this process.

Math Pathway FAQs

Frequently asked questions for the state-wide Math Pathway initiative that becomes effective in Fall 2024.

Why were the Math Pathways created?

Senate Bill 366 states, "To facilitate seamless transfer of credits, reduce excess credit hours, and ensure students take the courses needed for their future career, the articulation agreement must establish three mathematics pathways for students by aligning mathematics courses to programs, meta majors, and careers. A representative committee consisting of State University System faculty, faculty of career centers established under s.1001.44, and Florida College System institution faculty shall collaborate to identify the three mathematics pathways and the mathematics course sequence within each pathway which align to the mathematics skills needed for success in the corresponding academic programs and careers."

Does this apply to me?

Students who begin in the Florida College System in Fall 2024 or later and intend to graduate with the Associate in Arts, Associate in Science or Bachelor's degree must meet this requirement.

How do I know which Math class to take?

There are several ways to make sure you are taking the correct math class:

  1. For A.S. degree-seeking students, HawkGPS will reflect the required math class. For those in Associate in Arts transfer pathways, your HawkGPS will recommend the appropriate math class based on your declared pathway.
  2. The HCC website "Browse All Degrees" page lists each degree and the math courses associated with each degree.
  3. The HCC College Catalog lists each degree and the math courses associated with each degree.
  4. Academic Advisors are happy to discuss your math requirements. Visit this Advising Webpage and schedule an appointment.
What happened to MGF 1106 and MGF 1107?

The Florida Department of Education created two new courses (MGF 1130 and MGF 1131) to replace MGF 1106 and MGF 1107 beginning in Fall 2024.

MGF 1106 and MGF 1107 will be offered for the last time at HCC in Summer 2024.

If I was unsuccessful in MGF 1106 and/or MGF 1107, can I get grade forgiveness?

Yes, students who received a grade of D or F in MGF 1106 and/or MGF 1107 should speak with an advisor to discuss the following options:

  • Retake the course(s) in Summer 2024.  Remember these are more condensed courses in the summer and may not be the best option for students who have struggled with these courses previously. See our Summer 2024 classes here.
See an academic advisor for help.

Students facing a third or fourth attempt should complete a "Course Repeat Fee Waiver". You must meet with an Academic Advisor or Counselor to initiate this process.

What will I learn in MGF 1130 - Mathematical Thinking?

Here are the Course Intended Outcomes for the new MGF 1130 course:

  • Apply logic in contextual situations to formulate and determine the validity of logical statements using a variety of methods.
  • Apply mathematical concepts visually and contextually to represent, interpret, and reason about geometric figures.
  • Recognize the characteristics of numbers and utilize numbers along with their operations appropriately in context.
  • Analyze and interpret representations of data to draw reasonable conclusions.
  • Determine efficient means of solving a problem through investigation of multiple mathematical models.
What will I learn in MGF 1131 - Mathematics in Context?

Here are the Course Intended Outcomes for the new MGF 1131 course:

  • Apply mathematical models to civically contextual situations (e.g., Stocks, Finance, Voting, Population Dynamics, etc.).
  • Organize, visualize, and model data in a meaningful way.
  • Analyze and interpret representations of data to draw reasonable conclusions.
  • Engage in ways of thinking that may involve sample size, counting strategies, chance, ratios, and proportions.

Remember that while this course is a General Education Math course, it does not satisfy the Core requirement for Math.

What happens if I change my major?

It is important to speak with an academic advisor any time you change your major or academic plan.

For students who plan to transfer - please check with the college where you plan to transfer to see what math they require.

For students pursuing an AS degree - You may have the option to apply for a course substitution.

Make an appointment to speak with an advisor right away.
